Rainbow Falls Closure

Rainbow Falls is getting some work done on it!  As one of the National Park’s most popular trails, it has seen some wear and is currently undergoing a huge rehabilitation project. The project is expected to last around two years. For those of you not familiar with this wonderful trail, it is located off the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail and leads to a beautiful 80 foot high waterfall and to Mount LeConte. Mount LeConte is the third highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains. This project will impact hikers.

Rainbow Falls Closure

Rainbow Falls is an 80 Foot Waterfall

The Trail is Open on Weekends

This project began on May 8th. From May 8th to November 16th, Rainbow Falls Trail will be closed each week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The closed time will be from 7 a.m. on Mondays to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoons. However, during this same time period, the Trail will be open on Friday, Saturday and Sundays. It will also be open on federal holidays which include Labor Day, Columbus Day and the 4th of July holiday.

Parking Lot Closure

From May 8th to June 15th, the parking lot at Rainbow Falls will also be closed on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. After June 15th, the parking lot will open back up so hikers can access the Trillium Gap Trail and the Old Sugarlands Trail.

What Improvements you can Expect

The Trails Forever organization are the ones that will be completing this project. They plan to reduce trail braiding and improve drainage to prevent erosion along the trail. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park Trails and Roads Facility Manager, Tobias Miller, has stated that this will be “a long term solution to the various safety and route finding issues found along this section of the Rainbow Falls Trail and will allow visitors to enjoy the trail and the scenic area surrounding it safely for years to come.”

If you are not familiar with the Trails Forever organization, know that they have a wonderful and unique partnership with the Friends of the Smokies charity and the National Park itself. The Friends of the Smokies Foundation has donated over one million to fund numerous restoration projects on many trails throughout the Smokies. Recent projects have included the Alum Cave Trail and the Forney Ridge Trail. Volunteers make up a large portion of the Trails Forever organization.
