The Great Smoky Mountains host millions of visitors each year and the most popular season to come and see us is coming up. I’m sure everyone is starting to get their Summer vacation plans in order like deciding where to go and what to do when you get there. We know that vacations can get quite expensive and we take that into consideration and beyond here. We have a bunch of wonderful things to do in the area that help to not break the bank, so you can enjoy the more important things like making fond memories with your loved ones. If you’d like to hear about some of our favorite Free Things to do this Summer in Pigeon Forge then keep on reading!

Enjoy some Free Entertainment at the Island

This popular one stop shop is located between traffic light #4 and #5 and it has tons of fun that is already calling your name. One of the best times to visit is later on in the evening as the sun is beginning to set because they have a spectacular fountain show to watch that is completely complimentary! Grab a rocking chair and get ready for a show unlike any other in town. Watch as the water in the fountain dances around beautifully with the lights to a choreographed set of family friendly songs. We can guarantee that everyone will find a song they love and you’ll be tapping your feet by the end of it! Kids and adults alike will love getting to relax and take in some amazing scenery together. After the show fountains, make sure to grab a rocking chair at Ole Smoky Moonshine and enjoy some complimentary bluegrass music from their talented four piece assembles that perform all day and night outside of the store. The music is fantastic and it’s one of my favorite things to do when I visit this location or the one in Gatlinburg!

Take a walk around the Old Mill

If you’re a big fan of window shopping then you will love this location that is full of quaint shops and boutiques. You can browse through these locally owned shops that feature everything from kitchen products to clothing and even some one of a kind pottery! Here you will find the Old Mill General Store, Farmhouse Kitchen, Pigeon River Pottery, Sassafrass Clothing, and more. This is one of the best places to visit when looking for unique gifts. The history you get to see at the Old Mill is incredible and it’s at no charge to wander around and learn about how this area came to be. On your journey, you’ll get to see one of the most picturesque spots in town – the gristmill which, according to their website, is one of the oldest running mills in the country. We get to see our own little waterfall and this is a great place to visit for pictures and more.

Have a picnic at Patriot Park

Also located in the Old Mill is our beautiful park. You can pack up a delicious picnic and eat it in numerous spots on site. If you need a little shade, there’s a huge pavilion with picnic tables. There’s also a big grass field that you can set a blanket out on to enjoy your meal. There’s even a gazebo that you can rent that is right by the river! No matter which you choose, it’s a perfect spot to have your lunch with the family. Once you’re done with your meal, you can toss a frisbee around or even play ball on the open field. You can also feed the geese by the river or take a walk on the half mile trail where you’ll get to see flags from all 50 states and Pigeon Forge veteran memorials. This is a great place to spend the afternoon together with your loved ones!

Little Pigeon River Adventures

We know you’ll want to cool off this summer and the best way to do so is at the Little Pigeon River. You can access it all throughout Pigeon Forge like at the Old Mill or along the Riverwalk Greenway. Grab a couple floats and enjoy gliding along the water, it’s like a huge lazy river if you catch it on a nice day. The kids can splash around and have a great time soaking up the sunshine while staying cool. You can also do some fishing, just make sure to have a valid Tennessee Fishing License which you can pick up at our local Walmart. Fish get stocked weekly and the main thing you will find is trout. It makes for such a fun day on the water when you get to do a little fishin’ with the family!

Meet and Greet with the horses at Dolly Parton’s Stampede

We all love this family friendly dinner show, but one of our favorite parts is getting to greet and get an up close and personal view with some of the most incredible stars of the show. If you arrive early, you can stroll along their open horse walk and see all the beautiful breeds they have at this location. You can even meet with some of the performers and learn all about the horses and their specific breed, they’re always so kind and courteous and an absolute pleasure to speak with! You also receive a free ticket to the show as a thank you for being our guest.

Fun in the Sun with our On-Site Amenities

Whispering Pines has some fantastic amenities that the family will love to get to take advantage of on your getaway. If it’s a yucky day outside, have no fear, the indoor pool will be here to make sure mother nature doesn’t rain on your parade. There’s also a hot tub that you will love getting to lounge around in. We also have a big outdoor pool and hot tub for when the beautiful sun is shining because after winter, that’s all we want is to soak up the sun! Best of all, there is even a lazy river and we provide the tubes so you can just relax and float away for the day. In the mood for some barbecue? We have gas and charcoal grills located under our shaded picnic pavilion for everyone to use. The propane is provided as well as grilling utensils and it’s first come, first serve. There’s also a great fitness center to work off all that delicious food you just ate! You’ll love getting to spend a day with us.
